Workshop Description:


Zapin is a genre of Malay dance that was created based on "playing". In Malay Language, it is called as "Main". It is commonly called as “Main Zapin" in Malay dance community where the dancers execute the Zapin dance steps within the range of the music. The range of the music is controlled by the "gong", which also means that one set of sequence ( satu ragam ) is started after the "gong" and it is ended at the same time as the "gong" is hit.


There are many possibilities can be happened within the "gongs". Lead Artist would like to explore the use of "Chance" method developed by Merce Cunningham in Zapin's ragam. Of each count in the Ragam, after juggling the counts around, it is a wonder or surprise waiting for us to find out.


Objective:

  1. To explore the concept of "Change" by Merce Cunningham (contemporary) in traditional dance

  2. To explore the changes in the unchanged

  3. To explore a way of finding movements


Target:

  1. Dancers who have dance background


Pre-game:


1. Participants will learn 2 sets of ragam Zapin

2. Participants will do these 2 sets of ragam with music


Game:


1. Participants dissect 2 sets of Zapin movements into 2,3,4,6,7,8 each

2. Firstly, participants focus on the first ragam.

3. Participants draw the dice (could be handmade, to change the number from 1,2,3,4,5,6 to 2,3,4,6,7,8)

4. The number from the dice will decide the arrangement of their counting (gerak)

5. Draw the dice for 6 times. Re-draw if the number is repeated

6. Participants jot down the number

7. Participants re-arrange their first ragam and put it into movement according to the number that has been drawn

8. Participants who has finished the first ragam, they may proceed to second ragam

9. Can work in partner



Post-game:


1. Participants combine the 2 sets of ragam

2. Participants perform the new-creation of Zapin
