Your Memories, Our Identity

Take a minute and look back at the collaborative site specific project consisting three groups of three groups of artists presenting their observations and research through different art forms.

Silent Witness

Den Boer visualised in the images the disappearing traditional trades of Malaysian culture where she has captured both the stillness and the emptiness of the workspaces, without including the artisans. Caught in between the presence and absence, the workspace metaphorically became the silent witness of the artisans' work.

Silent Witness

A marvellous photography series by a Dutch photographer, Claudia Den Boer, was made visible after her one-month residency in Butterworth.

Silent Witness

A contemporary dance performance by Leo, Matt, Nourelle and Chun Wai was a moving piece choregraphed by Jinn Lau.

‘守ShÇ’u’ transformed the memories and stories of old artisans into a personalised vocabulary of movements, which explored the changing roles of hands right from infancy to adulthood and how they weaved the stories of artisans into a thought-provoking choreography to reflect the reality and fate of the traditional handicraft artisans in Butterworth.

The Fading Hands守艺

An in-depth presentation of the wrinkles and scars of the artisans, it visualises the stories about the struggles every artisan faces, and the challenges they experience as the world evolves in such a hurry.

A story is better told when the details are vivid to the eyes. This documentary installation features 4 screens in 1 space, which aims to provide an almost physically present to the audience, offers an intimate experience as if they are visiting the Artisans themselves.

The carefully recorded details of this production is an archive of the project, which can be used as a reference in/out of Malaysia.

Scenography

To bring the existence of the artisans to the audience, the scenography for ShÇ’u was created with the artisans' belongings collected by Jinn with the animated photographs taken by Claudia.

The artisans' attributes, essential to their profession, were intentionally used as the decor to express our appreciation to their contributions.

Finally, the scenography was then being boosted by the dramatic lighting effects by the lighting designer.

Claudia Den Boer

Claudia den Boer (NL, 1979) graduated in 2008 from the art academy AKV|St. Joost in the photography department. Photography is a way for Claudia to discover how she relates to places and spaces. Sometimes she comes across these places in daily life, other times she consciously searches for a specific place, area or landscape. Claudia says about this: “place as a phenomenon fascinates me because it is omnipresent, we move through places at any time of the day, it is what we see around us, it is where we meet, it is as it were scenery where our lives play out, and I believe that places have a great influence on our state of mind”.

Claudia works on personal projects, exhibits her work nationally and internationally and collaborates in multi-disciplinary projects. She also does commissioned work and teaches. Her first photobook Anchors was published in 2016, in which Den Boer shows that silence is different from emptiness. In the fall of 2020 she published her second photobook To pick up a stone. In her new book she further experimented with the photographed objects and places, seeking a deeper connection with the earth.
