Connecting with Community

Updated: Jun 18, 2021

Besides creating the awareness on the decline of the sunset industry, YMOI aimed to strengthen the connection between us, the presenters, and the audience as well as the community. This understanding helps recognise our identity as an individual and as a Malaysian, which in turn allows and motivates us to build a better Malaysia together.

YMOI was taken to many places to reach different groups of audience, with the intention and aim to achieve “bringing what’s matter and important to your attention with performing arts”. Hence it has set foot in school, art spaces, heritage site and arts festival, and met hundreds of people, from young to old of different races.

Our heartiest gratitude goes out to managers and coordinators of these lovely places, including Madam Yap from Chung Ling Butterworth High School, Khing from Hin Bus Depot, Annabelle & Fabian from Carbon Art Space, and Mr. Daniel from The Blue Mansion: thank you for being the most wonderful people for your kindness, generosity and support!

As the continuation of YMOI, Moving with Artisans looks forward to promoting greater discussions, interactions and better understanding among the artists, artisans, and the community.

*Connecting with School*

As a dedication to school and society, we visited and shared various experiences and knowledge about performing arts with the students from Chung Ling Butterworth (N.T.) High School.

The event was a big success as we received tremendous support from the advising teacher of Dance Society, Madam Theresa Yip, who has led the society for more than 20 years, and guest’s participation by school alumni, Joie Koo, who were previously the member of dance society.

*Connecting with Art Spaces*

We went into art spaces, such as Hin Bus Depot in Penang and Carbon Art Space, to interact with art enthusiasts and Sunday pop-up market shoppers as a part of our connection with the public via workshop and impromptu site-specific performance.

We managed to venture into exploring the possibilities of receiving many unexpected responses and very constructive feedback, and great interests from the audience.

*Connecting with Heritage Site*

Our work was also taken to one of Penang’s most iconic heritage site in George Town, Penang – The Blue Mansion.

We were fascinated by the mesmerising architecture of the building and the intriguing story of Cheong Fatt Tze., and meeting with the foreign visitors who were there appreciating the site.

Our heart was filled with love that day because of the many positive words from the heritage goers.

*Connecting with Arts Festival*

YMOI was brought to Butterworth Fringe Festival in 2018, where the complete four individual parts were presented within an old warehouse.

The performance was there for 2 consecutive days and it has greeted both local and international visitors of all ages and ethnicities.
